The Wall Street Journal and Harvard Business Review both have podcast subscriptions. Has anyone tried either podcast and can you tell me if they are worth the investment?

Thanks,

Robert

I'm currently listening to the HBR podcast: it's free and usually gives me very good ideas.

Took me a minute to find the free HBR link so I thought I would post it for everyone.

I'm not a big fan of either of the podcasts, but they're free, they come out infrequently and they sometimes have interesting topics, so I do listen to them. A similar podcast that you might look for is from McKinsey; similar to the HBR cast. They've been inactive for a long time, but recently released a new cast.

Generally, I find them very high level. Even when they make suggestions, you're still left to your own devices as to how to actually do what they said - "You need to open up your company and bring innovation in from the outside." Great idea - how?

Are they worth 20 minutes? Only because I'm exercising and need something to occupy my time anyway. Otherwise, I'd take very little value out of them.

My opinion - your mileage may vary.

I actually listen to the HBR Ideacast because I think it occasionally verges on specific behaviors and actions one can't take. Otherwise, it mostly tackles high, high level executive type topics. It also apes a lot of its material from the own magazine, so it can be very redundant to read one and listen to the other.

Let me add more: HBR podcast is completely different from MT.
Not a practical and focused podcast: it's an high level overview of very interesting, some times strategic, topics.
Usually decent sound quality, easy to listen also from non english speakers ... good and easy while moving from home to work by car.

I'm rarely the best person to ask about podcasts, because I don't listen to many...as I think I've said before, I don't think of myself as a podcaster, but rather as a management consultant who uses podcasts as a distribution mechanism to reach millions.

Further, I'm sometimes surprised by what people don't know - it just seems to me that a manager's responsibilities include significant personal/professional development.

But, I do like both of these, as long as I don't apply my "what can I DO?" standard. They talk about interesting topics that effective managers do think about.

I like the producers too - WSJ and HBR are my two favorite periodicals.
