Hello All,

Looking for some good advice here.

I have been with my current employer for six great years.

The organization has been very good to me and I have been promoted 3 times. The last promotion was substantial including moving my family across the country.

I took my current opportunity at a lower market rate with the game plan that I would be able to show my value in this leadership position. When I was hired my hiring manager told me it would be a stretch but I have succeeded in all areas of business growth and leadership.

Here is my dilemma the company has changed policies and now does not give any incremental increases to base salaries. Market point for a senior manger with my responsibilities is $20 – 30 k more per annum.

I have an offer from a highly regarded competitor.

Higher base ($30k), with greater incentive compensation and a smaller revenue number to obtain.

I do not want to leave my current employer however I have earned market rate compensation.

How should I use this offer or will it be dangerous if I truly don’t want to leave?

Looking for thoughts in what I do now…….The new company wants an answer within 72 hours, and yes Mark I told them 6 weeks before I could give notice.

Knowing so little, I say stay.

Never leave for pay alone, particularly when your feelings about pay include "I've earned market compensation."

The goodwill you've built at your present firm is worth the pay difference.

Keep us posted.

Well here is the update. I decided to stay where I am currently employed. I toyed with the idea of using the offer to negotiate my current salary but didn’t think that would have been a good idea. (If I am wrong please advise!)

I can’t thank Mark and Mike for all of the valuable information contained on this website and in the pod casts!

Please keep up the good work!

Best of luck and thanks again!

You're right on the mark. It would not have been a good idea. Yes, you probably could have raised your current salary, but you would have lost a lot of good will.

Smile, look forward and refocus on your company.
