On the basis that the best advice comes from users and not salesmen, could members please suggest the best mobile / cell phone.
I currently use an XDA which is more like a palm held pc with a phone, its big and bulky and I want something light and sleek.
I like the windows mobile os, it must integrate with outlook, I prefer using a stylus and because I'm vain :wink: it must look nice and I dont want a very small screen.
I'm currently drawn to the new Palm Treo 750V (for its looks) but have no experience of Palm or the Blackberry pearl.
Any suggestions?

It depends what you're looking for in a phone.
For e-mail, there is no competitor to the Blackberry 8700. Its e-mail is FAR better than any other cell phone in my opinion. If your company offers "push" imap or you have a Yahoo e-mail account and a data plan, this cell phone is the best choice for e-mail. The pearl offers a similar e-mail program but I'm not a fan of the keyboard on it; despite the fact that it is still the "thumb" style typing, it is difficult to hit the right letters. I consider myself to have pretty agile fingers but you'd have to try it out to see which you prefer if you are stuck between the two. In my opinion, the 8700 is a better e-mail device and the Pearl is a better phone; you need to decide which component is more important to you.
If you're looking for a phone geared more towards the multimedia side, the Nokia N93. It has a great camera as well as one of the best music players for a cell phone. You'll be disappointed in the e-mail capabilities though. It also is a little thicker than most phones so this could get in the way of being sleek.
I would definitely stay away from Windows Mobile. I find it hard to use, too complex and a tad buggy for a cell phone.
The Palm OS is easy to use and the e-mail is just okay in comparison to the blackberry program. As a phone, it is a great system but I'd recommend the Pearl over the 750V.
I've currently use the 8700, Pearl and the Palm 700p (no not all at once). I used a Windows Mobile phone a while ago and got absolutely fed up with it. Out of the three, I'd recommend the two Blackberries. If you were to choose between those two, you need to decide what your priorities are: better e-mail or a better phone? Hope this doesn't sound too salesman for you :wink:

Sorry you are getting rid of it. I was thinking of getting an XDA exec as it has wireless capabilities, I could download Skype onto it and get free/ cheap calls on it when travelling and in a wireless hotspot. Also for accessing email on it when travelling for work. I know it is a bit clunky, but the keyboard seems very practical.

Thanks for the advice alyurek. To clarify, I need a phone so I can check my emails when i'm not in the office (2/3 days a week) I'm lucky in that I never get or send more then 20 a day and none of them are urgent in the sense that I need to read / action straight away. The phone I do depend on and our current contract allows free calls within the organisations mobiles so I do use it a lot. I use outlook for my diary and tasks so again that would be important. I also use my present phone for internet access (MT site of course) and for editing word or excel files. The multimedia side is unimportant. Does the 8700 do all that?

Hey Edmund,
For all of the e-mail and outlook, you'll have to check with your company. I know it's something to do with their exchange server if you're looking to sync with Outlook. If you're just looking for pop or imap then it works great but some of the extra Blackberry e-mail services need to be done by the company servers.
I'll check tonight into whether I can edit Word and Excel files, I've never actually tried it before!

I've tried editing excel files and it seems that I can't edit them, only view them. However, I found a program called eOffice which allows you to edit and create new excel files. I haven't tried it yet so I couldn't tell you anything on it.
Another point is that I put one of my huge spreadsheets on the screen and it noticeably slowed down the phone. Other than that, it performed beautifully.

I have a Cingular 8125 with Windows Mobile 5. This version of Windows Mobile is much more functional for me than previous versions and isn't the SmartPhone version with limited functionality.
I can get my email (both work and personal) and surf the internet if I need to. I also integrates to a Bluetooth GPS unit I have for doing maps while on travel.
It definitely fits my needs. I think the next generation version of this phone is the Cingular 8525.

I agree with you about the wireless capabilities of the XDA EXEC, which is why I intend hanging on to it and my 13 yo daughter wants it for MSM. I like the idea of Skype and will look into it, but all in all as a day to day business use phone it has to go because its to big and heavy.

The Cingular 8125 is badged as the O2 XDA Mini over here and it was on my original wish list.

Treo 700p
I tried every phone out there and I'm very happy with my new Treo 700p (though places without good CDMA service, I realize it's not an option). Great all around PDA/phone and my provider has reasonable voice+data rates (I pay for it, not work.)
I will admit the BB 8800 has a great drool factor.

Well done! I've had to consider a similar situation. I road tested a Windows mobile and did not like it at all. Just not friendly. I like and use my Palm TX for using with outlook which it does magnificently well. It also has an adequate abiility for MS documents, size of screen will always be a problem. Will you get the same HotSync application with the Treo? If so it will be good.
But I wanted email and plumped for the Blackberry 8700 and it is excellent. So it was the Palm TX and Blackberry combo...working well at the moment.
The only issue, is that together with an iPod, jackets pockets start to droop!

I use a Treo 700P and love it. Have 4 batteries. Mike didn't love his, but also hated even more his windows CE Ipaq, and so now LOVES LOVES LOVES his Blackberry.
I pay the maximum Sprint will sell me for minutes, and I nearly go over every month.
My brother is in handset strategy for Nokia, and I keep telling him I will pay a THOUSAND DOLLARS NOW for a device that does what my treo does with a form factor like the Iphone or as skinny and light as the razor.
Whatever you do, if you use it a lot, get hardware protection.

I'll reiterate that ... I am LOVING my blackberry. I swore off them after I left the corporate world (used them for years), but now can't believe I went without it.
Although I respect the heck out of Steve, I have reserved a special spot in a very hot place for my Cingular 8125. It and I simply didn't get along.

You came out on top. I just purchased the Treo750, and it's the best purchase I've ever made that business related. I'm out of my office all day 4 days a week, and I know all the Panera's and Starbuck's in Chicagoland to get internet access and check email. Now, I just check and I'm updated or able to get a quick note out every hour or so.

Well thats me using the Palm Treo 750v for the past 4 weeks, and what can I say about. Well its fantastic, it meets all my needs and it looks good. it has the windows mobile os which I'm used to along with some neat Palm type enhancments like the web search functionor the "thread" view for messaging. Using the key pad instead of a stylus was different but now I seldom use the stylus. On the minus side nothing so far.

I run a Tier 2 B2B market for one of the big carriers so my comments are going to be a bit biased but I would be glad to answer any questions (sales or technical related) that I can. I have been a hardcore BlackBerry user for almost 3 years and it has changed the way I do business (in a good way). You are either a Treo person or a BlackBerry person - I have never met anyone that likes (or hates) them both.
