Hello everyone;

I am an avid fan of Manager-Tools and I find my self replaying these frequently to keep myself up-to-date.

I had a question that was brought to my mind after replaying the podcast on recruiters. My wife needs to return to Ireland to take care of her parents and I am looking into possibly looking for a position there. I would like to build relationships with recruiters so that I can start seeing if there are any opportunities for me but since they are not in the same area as I am, do the same rules for building relationships stated in the podcast still apply? I am open to any and all suggestions to help me with this dilemma.

Hi CalKen,
I'm orginally from Ireland and still go over a lot, what area are you interested in working in?

Edmund;

Thanks for your reply. my wife is from Cork City and although I would entertain options in any area in Ireland I would prefer Cork and the surrounding area.

My field of expertise is technical (electrical/electronic) and I have an MBA in International Business. What is typical for a relationship with a recruiter in Ireland? Is the culture such that it is acceptable to email resumes directly to them or do you think I should wait until my next trip to Ireland to pursue this further? Is it typically acceptable for people to go directly to companies and speaking with HR managers or is it customary to go through recruiters?

Thanks again for your attention in this matter.

Hi CalKen,

The short answer is no, most companies have a duty to advertise vacancies, in saying that it would do no harm to contact companies to express an interest in working with them and to enquire about vacancies.

The use of recruitment agencies is becoming more popular in Ireland especially with non national companies which in your line of work is probably 99% of them. So yes I would say that you should contact them.

A couple of resources that you may find helpfull in your search for employment are www.ireland.com which is the online version of the Irish Times which carries a lot of vacancies and www.unison.ie the online version of the Irish Independant a daily national paper which carries job vacancies. Other sites include irishjobs.ie and recruitireland.com

Good luck with the relocation which I hope wont be much of a culture shock.
