Forums

Hi Michael and Mark,

Is it an option to make a specific RSS-feed for each Forum category. By doing this I only receive the content I'm interested in and it will probably stay maintainable to read.

Kind regards,
Dennis

I second this suggestion, assuming it is relatively easy for you guys to set up.

Posting in the forums is pretty active, and my feedreader only lists the last 15 posts. So I often miss things in my feedreader, simply because I don't check it often enough to catch the last 15 posts. We all love you guys so much, it seems like I'd have to check every hour or so to ensure I don't miss anything. If I could monitor separate feeds for each category or subcategory, I'd probably miss less.

Thanks for all your hard work and great content. I hope you interpret requests like this for what they are -- our interest in ensuring we can stay current with the wonderful content you host here.

All,

I'll take a look into it ... I'm sure there is a phpBB mod out there somewhere that does this.

Thanks!

Dennis/HRUBY,

Sorry it took me a while to get to this one ...

If you want to subscribe to just a single forum, add the phrase "?f=X", where X is the forum number to which you wish to subscribe, to the standard RSS feed URL (http://www.manager-tools.com/forums/rss.php).

For example, for an RSS feed of only the "General Questions and Comments" forum, the URL would be: http://www.manager-tools.com/forums/rss.php?f=1

So, how do you know the forum id? If you hover your mouse over the forum titles on the main forum page, you'll note that the URL displayed (typically) at the bottom of your browser, ends in "?f=X", where X is the forum id. That's the number you'll want to use in the URL above to get that specific forum's posts.

Here's a couple examples that hopefully demonstrate how it works ...

Effective Manager Tools Conference Forum: http://www.manager-tools.com/forums/rss.php?f=19

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Forum: http://www.manager-tools.com/forums/rss.php?f=18

General Questions and Comments: http://www.manager-tools.com/forums/rss.php?f=1

Hope that helps!

best regards,
Mike

Much obliged, Mike. It works like a charm.

Mike,

Which mod are you using to produce the RSS feed from this forum? I'm an admin for a tech forum that uses phpBB, and we're considering adding an RSS feed. This one works so well that I'd like to make sure it's one of the mods we consider.

Thanks!

Wow. I don't know how I missed this post. I use Google Reader for all my RSS feeds, and now I have an easier way to stay on top on MT posts!

jael,

Turns out that we didn't need a plug-in or mod ... works straight out of the box. Look at rss.php in the phpbb home directory.

Interesting - thanks for the tip!

Mike,
May I suggest that you change the titles for the RSS feed? I've subscribed and due to the width of the title all I am getting in Firefox Live Bookmarks is a long list of "Manager Tools Effective Manager Conference: ..." without being able to see the titles of the threads/posts themselves.

Thanks,
David

Thanks for the suggestion, David. Unfortunately, I can't do that ... being generated by phpBB, the title of the RSS feed is fixed to use the title of the forum.

Sorry.

Mike
