I was informed today that my boss will be moving me out of my office into a cubicle, giving me a step down in title and cutting my salary to reflect the new change.

This is not entirely un-expected since I told them in March that my role was not well defined and offered a solution that was ignored (actually interupted before I finished the first scentence). I've spent my time since then looking for things to do in the company but I've had no new projects assigned to me and I've not been given any feedback either positive or negative.

So, the question, what do I do now? It seems like there's really no way that staying at the company could be good for my career, but how do I handle this professionally? and what does the company owe me if I refuse?

Thanks

Could you share a few more details with us?

- Do you have people reporting to you? Has that changed?
- Have the products or services you're responsible for changed, and if so, in what way?
- Is the company having financial issues generally?
- Have others been given projects that you would have expected would be yours?

In the short run, I'd recommend:

- being polite and respectful to everyone. Don't burn bridges.
- work on your resume (check out the resume cast)
- build your network (check out the networking and recruiter casts)

I had 3 direct reports who were laid off in March. The company has been on a downward cycle for a while now. And the few projects that have come through have all been assigned to other team members.

As far as my work, the nature of my work has not changed but there's a lot less of it to do right now.

I did have some health issues to get over in the spring or I would have put my resume out at that time.

It looks like they're showing you the door.

- prep your resume (interviewing series)
- contact recruiters (see podcast)
- get offers, take offer (see podcasts... you get the idea :) )
- resign (see above)

You now have the chance to practice all this good MT stuff, yay!

(feeble attempt at cheering you up)

Thanks for the replies. Your comments help confirm what my thinking has been over the weekend. It is time to leave. I'm actually sort of glad that they didn't string this out any longer.
