I've found myself in a position where I need to do some Product Management.

I realize that this is off topic for the group, but surely there are some product mgmt / marketing folks here that can give me a recomendation.

Books, forums, or blogs?

Thanks!

It all depends on what you need? Are you doing branding, product extensions, new products, services, launching a product? Details details please.

Thanks RNTT

I'm a software development manager developing additional features, and potential new products for a software development company.

Up until now, my main focus has been in software engineering from Requirements gathering down.

Now, I think that I need to start helping to categorize requirements slightly up the chain where they are still product features.

Some of the things that I believe I can help my company with are figuring out which features are more valuable, and that will help me prioritize and assign resources better.

Currently, it doesn't appear that there is a lot of data - at my company - about what features are asked for, how many people asked for them and what the benefit in delivering them will be.

In a quick overview of the product FeaturePlan (www.featureplan.com) I saw a report that included the cost to develop a features, how many customers had requested it, it's position in the product strategy and how it would fit into a competitive comparison with other competitor's products.

All this leads me to believe that I don't have a really good grasp of what kind of things I can do to act as a Product Manager.

I would start looking around here....it would also be helpful if your company was a member of the American Marketing Association.

Though the Browns fan in me hesitates to help a likely Steelers fan... :D

I've been in direct marketing for 16 years - and have recented expanded into product management. Feel free to ask anything specific here or PM me.

I grew up about 2 hours west of Cleveland, though even as a rebellious youngster I was a Bengal's fan.

There's also a great Q&A style Product Management blog-type site here:

http://www.goodproductmanager.com/

I've had product manager colleagues of mine write in with questions before and the responses have always been professional and helpful. There's also some discussion of what product management is, exactly (some of us could use reminding from time to time...)
