Received an LinkedIn message yesterday from a headhunter about a job that is very similar to mine (in title - I didn't get much detail about the job description) asking if I was interested or if I could refer someone. My guess is that she wasn't referred to me - she just saw my profile and contacted me.

I've listened to the podcasts on working with recruiters, but I wanted some opinions on how much of those points are relevant considering that she wasn't really referred to me, she just fished me out of the pile it would seem.

BTW - I checked out the agency she is with and it seems to be a very generic exec. recruiting firm with no particular specialty.

Thanks!

I think your assumption is correct. I get calls like that a lot with the recruiter admitting that they found me on LinkedIn and what they were searching for that led them to me.

I treat them like any other recruiter: I hear them out, see if they seem genuine or not, and deal with them accordingly.

Agreed.

In the long run, how they found me doesn't matter anywhere near as much as how they found the job they're recruiting for!

Make sure to ask how many positions they've filled for their "client." I recommend this because there are recruiters out there who not only troll for candidates, they troll online for jobs to fill.

Well, I have my answer - I took a few moments to call her and left a message. She never returned my call.

That made it easy...

Thanks for the input!
