BLUF: would you advise a student who's been offered an invitation to join Beta Gamma Sigma (a business-related honorary society) to join?

More:  my future daughter-in-law is a junior in college, majoring in business, with an interest in iternational marketing.  She's a bright kid and has been given an invitation to join Beta Gamma Sigma and she's asked my advice about whether it's worth the $60 to join.  My initial reaction is yes, given that most any opportunity to meet people and make connections is worthwhile.  However, I know nothing about this group or of the resume value it adds (in addition to the networking value).

What comments or advice would you offer?

I may be in the minority here.  I have never heard of anyone being hired soley on their being part of a group, be it a fraternity, soriety, Toastmasters or anything else.

If your daughter-in-law can afford the $60 and thinks it will create some opportunities and let her have some fun, go for it.  However, in an interview, I would not mention that she agonized over a $60 decision - not a good indicator for an up and coming business person.

It's good chance for her to start developing a professional network and she may have access to some additional resoruces (seminars, meet/greets, whatever) as a result. She can always unjoin, but may not get repeated offers to join up later...It's only $60!!!

Also, she may realize that sometimes she (not the school or her employer) has to go out-of-pocket for a great opportunity.. That way she wont shy away from continuting the MT/CT subscription that you give her as a graduation gift...
