Today is day 90 of my being unemployed and in the last 90 days I have had about 30 Recruiter contacts, and triple that number of conversations with them about todays search market economy.  I have some interesting quotes which help reveal various perceptions (correct or not) from some that stick in my mind.

Recruiter A said: "I dont usually find any viable candidates on "linkedin.com", I see those being job hoppers.  If some one has more than 3 positions in the last 10 years, they are out of the mix."

Recruiter B said: "I would never work with a Recruiter that was not in direct relationship with the Hiring Client...too much information would be lost in the transfer from man to man."  (This was said after me asking if He was, as I had a viable position proposed by Recruiter who was 2 Recruiters away from the direct Client Recruiter).

Recruiter C said " As a Manager seeking a job, I would never apply through a job board....I would track the position posted on the board to the actual company as best I could via research and go direct to that company and save the commission in this economy."

I have few more more and will append or repost when I dig them up.

I would love to hear what Wendii has to say about this, but I can tell you my take:

These are recruiters.  They see LinkedIn and Monster as competitors, and they see other Recruiters as, well, competitors too.

Grain of salt time, I'd say.

Some professions are better represented on linkedin than others, so it's possible that this person isn't finding good candidates there.  However, it's also possible they just aren't very good at mining it.  My judgement would have to based on more information.  However, 3 jobs in 10 years isn't excessive.  Most people move jobs between every 2 and 4 years, so this comment would make me dubious about anything else said.

As a recruiter, it's always better to be directly connected to the hiring manager.  As a corporate recruiter, my job is to understand the role, the team and the hiring manager sufficiently to be able to pass that information accurately to agency recruiters.  In fact, I'm able to add something in that I can tell the recruiters things about the hiring manager that he would never say himself.  So yes, and no.

Recruiter C said " As a Manager seeking a job, I would never apply through a job board....I would track the position posted on the board to the actual company as best I could via research and go direct to that company and save the commission in this economy."

Why would someone who is making money from being between the candidates and the company recommend going straight to the company?  That's commercial madness.

None of these comments make much sense to me.  But if the recruiter gets you a job, everything else goes out the window!
