Loving the podcasts, but I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that Michael's recording is always crystal clear but Mark's seems to have some background noise? Doesn't detract one iota from the enjoyment of the casts but thought I would provide some feedback!

It must be
:)
Depends on the podcast
Sometimes it's easy to tell that Mark and Mike aren't in the same place, because of the differences in environmental sound -- I've heard a rooster crow more than once. :)
I guess it's a matter of different equipment setups in their locations. Different rooms, different microphones, etc.
In the podcasts I've listened to (and I've got about 200 to go), they usually mention if they are actually in the same place when recording the cast.

Ah that explains it - thanks

Almost never
Almost never are we in the same place. Maybe 5 times a year?
There is a bit of history to the various places we've recorded, but if you're listening to casts over the last year, I've been on the road a lot. (I called my mom on her birthday from our Chicago conference (and everyone wished her a happy birthday) and before I could say Happy Birthday, she asked, "where are you?")
Also, my office in a house we've moved to has slightly less good acoustics. But I'm having a rug delivered.

And there was me thinking
And there was me thinking you guys were in the same room! That being the case you do a terrific job of creating the impression of a relaxed conversation over a table in an office (for UK listeners similar to the Mel Smith and Gryff Rhys Jones sketches!).
Keep up the great work - the Managing a massive workload podcasts were really excellent and given I move to a new job Monday give me some great direction should my first direct's meeting start with a plea that 'we just have too much to do!'

Our pleasure
We're glad to do it.
It's a privilege to serve you, even from 2000 miles apart. ;-)
