I found this amazing podcast and website through chance more than anything and have found it utterly fascinating and informative.

I have been working in my career of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Asset Management for 10 years now and I have just accepted an offer for my first team leader / managerial role in a public sector organisation which I will be new too.

I have not had any official managerial training, but been trying to learn from the managers I have had through my career. However, I have been listening to as many Manager Tools podcasts as possible over the last month, including the BASICS series.
I was wondering it would be possible if you could advise me of any specific podcasts or series I should listen to to help with this exciting next step in my career.

Please let me extend my extreme gratitude in advance.

Kind regards

Hi Matthew,

I'm in a similar position. I've been in the corporate world for 10 years now. I joined my most recent company in September last year and I've just been told that they want to give me two directs, one here (based in the UK) and one out in the Far East.

I've been listening to Manager Tools for about 8 months but must have gone through most of the podcasts by now, and I really have learnt so much even though I'm not a Manager (yet!). I'm now nervous and also really excited at getting my own directs and put some of this into practice.

For me the most insightful cast has been the DISC Simple Downfall series. If you've not done your own DISC profile I would highly recommend it, I think self-awreness is under-rated these days. I think, rather than specific casts, the most useful principle is the whole ethos around the principle of what managers are for. You are there to help your directs be the best they can be so that you, as a team, can be as effective as possible.

 Hi Jonno,

Many thanks for your reply.

It certainly sound like we are in the same boat, despite my directs not being in such glamorous locations.

I will certainly check out the DISC series, and totally agree that self awareness is really important.

let me know how you get on in your new role.

Kind regards

Matt, Jonno,

You are right. Start with the Manager Tool Basics. It is critical to master the ideas in the Rolling Out The Trinity  series.  Each of us has our own biases and personality quirks that makes our approach to management unique. If you DO know your DISC then you can watch for your most common types of mistakes.

Do you have a local manager who can support you while you take this next step?

Hi Martin,

Unfortunately I am new to the area and organisation and so my network does not cover this area.

I can see how useful having a mentor would be to me but I would not have a clue about how to go about finding one, apart from searching google.

Do you have any suggestions on that?

Hi Matt-

First off, how's the new managerial role going?  Looks like it's been a year since your post, so this may be too little, too late.  But I've been in your shoes before.  And I'm a GIS guy, too!

So if you still need someone to chat with/act as a mentor, I'm happy to help.  I definitely don't know everything, but I can hopefully help you avoid some pain and suffering.  PM me if you want to connect.

 Dear Chris,

Thank you so much for your reply a few months ago. Please accept my sincere apologies for not replying sooner.. Can't make up excuses just very pre-occupied with the job.

the job itself is going well thanks. Been over a year now and things are humming along nicely.

i have slowly been building my sphere of responsibility and delivering some great projects. Although I can't claim it has all been smooth sailing, not by a long shot. But this being the first managerial position, I have not killed anyone yet.

your offer of being a mentor is extremely kind and I am very grateful indeed. I would certain like to take you up on that offer.

I shall send you a little message introducing myself.

kind regards
