Not sure if this website is the place, but..............

I really don't know where to start, but I have been with the same company for many years now and would like to get into HR and management within HR. I am trying to find courses and books I can go through in order to change my behavior and actions to be more in line with what my employer wants. I've never gone for management before and don't know as much about politics working with other departments and with higher up managers as I'd like.

Where do I start

You ought to check out the series on Getting Ready to Get Promoted. It's a lengthy series, so I won't go into detail here. You can find the first piece here: https://www.manager-tools.com/2014/02/getting-ready-get-promoted-chapter...

Bottom line is that it's a long road (an 18 month campaign). There are a lot of things you can do to get ready and to coordinate with your boss. Good luck!

Nice catch mmcconkie...I neglected to mention the series! Thank you for the reminder.

It is unlikely that you can move both into HR and into Management at the same time.   I suggest picking one (say HR) and tackling that first.

First step I would suggest is to get to know people in your company's HR Department.  Make friends there.  Ask them how you can help them with anything HR related.  Volunteer.

Once you have established some friends in HR, and a reputation as a helper, you can ask them what kinds of roles tend to come up in HR within your company and what kinds of skills the HR department look for when hiring into these roles.  If you don't have these skills, it would be up to you to find ways wither within your organisation or externally to acquire such skills so that you would be considered in the future.

Hope that helps

Kevin
