Should employment and leadership be separated on a college student resume?

I embrace the Manager-Tool resume. I have some mentees who strongely assert the need to separate employment positions from volunteer/leadership positions. Some even insist on listing relavant coursework and skills on resumes, "becuase that's what they want to see when making internship decisions."
