I've enjoyed the recent podcasts about answering "tell me about yourself" and resume construction. It seems that we have an underlying assumption that we're interviewing with professional interviewers. But it's not uncommon for me to see interviews being conducted with managers who may only interview once ot twice/year. Do any of the recommendations change when interviewing with a team lead, especially if it's an internal interview instead of an external interview?

Hi Chuckbo,

interviewing with someone who stinks as an interviewer can be frustrating. Especially when you know it and they don't.

For me, I don't think much changes, though I'd welcome differing opinions.

  • They have the power until an offer is made.
  • You have to answer the questions they ask, not the questions that you want to answer.
  • Focus on results and accomplishments.
  • Show value in terms of what you can offer and what's in it for them if they invite you to join their team.
  • Respect their role as a decision-make.
  • Make sure you have a strong relationship with your current boss and their endorsement for internal moves.

Chris
