Hi Everyone,
I am working on a title re-evaluation project right now. We currently have 2 engineering roles, Level 1 and Level 2, that have distinct competencies. We also have a business need behind the differences in competencies. The 2 rolls have been in place and unchanged in 10 years which is why we are re-evaluating them. The career path goes from Level 1 to Level 2. There are several people who over the years have been promoted from Level 1 to Level 2 and have been at Level 2 for several years.
As part of the evaluation we want to determine whether or not it makes sense to add a Level 3 soley to be used for promotion purposes to provide upward direction for people that have been Level 2 for a long time and have a proven track record. The responsibilites of Level 2 and Level 3 will be almost identical.
I would appreciate feedback on this idea.
Have you tried it? How did it go?
What are the pros/cons of doing this?
Do you know of any reference materials for/against this?
I looked at several books and could not find anything directly addressing this topic. I have found a few articles on the web but there seems to be an even number for and against without a lot of meat about why.
Thanks,
Tony
