Hi All. This is my first post...I am very thankful to have found this community!

There is a lot of talk in the business world about developing your own personal brand. This underlines the importance of cultivating what you want to be known for as a professional and knowing personal strengths.

My question to you is: how do you develop your own personal brand? Are you aware of any good resources to help identify personal strengths? How do you develop a brand that is unique?

Thank you!

There's too much confusion  (and abuse) around the term, "brand." Back in the day when "brand" was something you did to cattle, it was important to develop a good solid reputation amongst your co-workers, customers, and professional peers.

Wouldn't a better question be, "How do I develop a reputation as a leader (or expert if you don't want to lead) in my organization and profession? Then it becomes easier to identify the attributes you need. A partial list would be...

  • Ethical behavior
  • Effective manager
  • Ability to get the job done
  • team player
  • Open to innovation
  • Adaptability
  • Knowledgeable about my profession

Then you take steps to acquire each of those attributes. You be sure to resist temptations to be unethical. You become a continuous learner to improve your management skills, you discipline yourself to set and reach goals, etc.

(Given the growing popularity of tattoos, I'm wondering if, 20 years from now, instead of referring to your personal brand, people will refer to your personal or corporate "tatoo.":-)
