For an internal interview on a casual friday is the guidance on wearing a suit still stand?

Thanks,

Scott

If the interview was on a Tuesday, you would wear a suit. You dressing for the job interview environment. It shows that you are taking the interview, the potential job, and your career seriously. If you need to, bring casual clothing to change into after or just ditch the jacket and tie.

One drawback of internal interviews is that the applicant (and the interviewers) can come off a bit causal because people know each other. This is a hazard. Prepare and execute like you do not know them. Also, you are not dressing for the job you have you are dressing for the job you want. Treat this as a job interview and not just another meeting.

I have done a lot of internal and external interviewing. I continue to be amazed at how internal candidates shoot themselves in the foot by either not taking the interviews seriously or by assuming that the interviewers know them and know what they do and that they do not need to really answer the questions. I sat through an internal interview once (as  the only interviewer not from that division and who did not know the candidate) and the candidate not only directed the responses to the others (not me) but the employee continually used phrases like "you know what I do",  "you remember what I did on the Owen's project", and such. "I" did not know.  That person not only did not get the position but the other interviewers were embarrassed because they had touted this candidate as someone with high potential and realized that the employee had a severe lack of vocational maturity or awareness.

P.S. Not just any suit. But one that is well kept, pressed, and the like. Good luck !

I would dress just like it was an external interview and go with the suit.  I like Mdave's point about bringing a change of casual cloths for after the interview.  Also, as Mdave points out don't be relaxed.  Prepare and execute on your interview just as if it were an external interview.  I have seen people lose that "sure thing promotion" because they acted like it was their job to lose and did not prepare for the interview.

I knew the answer when I was typing the post but its always good to have some support. I wore a dark gray suit and followed the MT advice. I feel the interview went well, my pre-work using the advice from the interview series prepared me very well. While the interview was more casual (driven by the interviewers)- I stayed professional and provided answers based on the model... and then there was the close....

I did it.. it was a little awkward since it was an internal interview. The response from the CIO and other interviewer was “We knew that…“ They smiled… we shook hands… and it was done.

Despite the outcome I fully recommend the interview series, it did a good in preparing me for the interview. The only thing that could have prepared me more would be starting sooner (Which I recommend)…
Thanks Mike and Mark for provide such a great service. I will keep the community up to date on the outcome.
Cheers,
Scott

No official news as of yet. I was asked to complete a caliper assessment. I have been following up weekly per the advice of the interviewing series. Heard positive rumors but as Mark says until you got something, you got nothing.

I received an offer last Friday. I accepted and am now in the new position. The interview series works.... Closing Works... and how to handle an offer works. I can't say enough about the product... It is worth its weight in gold.

Thanks for the great product.
