Hi my fellow MT folks!

I wanted to share a quick story with the community and find out how you would handle this weird situation.  I recently interviewed for a Director position with a company.  My first interview as for four hours, at which time I met with HR, two peer Directors, and the VP I would be reporting too.  I felt the interview went great and received a call a couple of days later asking that I come back in to meet with an Executive and to also meet with HR again.

The interview as setup so I would meet for the first 30 minutes with the Executive and then HR would come to get me, ask a few more interview questions, take me on a tour of the building and give me an opportunity to ask about benefits.

The interview with the Executive I felt went pretty good, not my best interview, but still I felt pretty good.  The interview as supposed to last 30 minutes, and at 36 minutes he apologized and said he had to leave for another meeting.  Directly after the interview I was supposed to interview with HR again so I waited patiently in the conference room where the Executive left me.

After 10 minutes, now 16 minutes after the second interview was to start, I sent an e-mail to the HR person asking if I should wait in the conference room or go back out to the waiting area.  I was worried that maybe she thought that I was still interview wtih the Executive and maybe she didn't know we were done.  So I wanted another 15 minutes, still no one had come to get me and no response back to my e-mail, so I decided to go out to the receptionist.

I went out to the receptionist and explained that I was supposed to be interviewing with HR, however they never came back to the conference room to get me and wonder if she could assist in seeing if an emergency came up, etc.

The receptionist tried e-mail, instant messaging, and calling the HR person and they never received a response.  The receptionist also tried reaching out to others in HR and never received a response.  She also alerted her boss to what was happening and sent an e-mail to the head of HR.

I was worried that the HR person had a family emergency or maybe got caught in a meeting running over, so I patiently waited in the waiting room for another 45 minutes.  After 45 minutes, now an hour and 15 minutes after my interveiw was supposed to start, I went back to the receptionist to see if she had heard anything.  She said that she had tried reaching out to anyone in HR she had on her list and notified her boss that she could not reach anyone.  She told me that she thought I should re-schedule as she did not have any information on what happened.  I asked if I could wait another 10-15 minutes, and she said yes but that I would probably just have to re-schedule.

I then tried to call my contact in HR directly from my cell and still no answer.  I waiting a little more time, and then told the receptionist that I would leave and follow-up with HR.  I was geniunely concerned that something horrible had happened, requring the HR person to leave in a hurry.

When I got back out to my car I called the HR person once more and this time I left a voicemail, indicating my concern and hoped everything was ok and just asked for a call back.

Two days go by and I haven't heard anything, so I decided to call again and left a second voicemail and then I also sent a follow-up e-mail.  Then I waited two more days, still no response, and left another voicemail.  I then waiting two more days and left another voicemail.  Now two more days has passed, and I'm wondering if this is their way of telling me to get lost.

Have you ever encountered this and if so, what would you do?  I'm considering reaching out to the VP on LinkedIn or trying to figure out his e-mail address, but now I'm just concerned about working for the company.  I honestly don't think I said or did anything to "blow" the interview, however maybe I didn't impress as much as another candidate.  Very weird situation and not sure what to do next from a professional standpoint.

Hi Jay,

That's a very strange and sad tale.  Like you, I cannot understand any possible reason for this kind of treatment.  That you have remained genuinely concerned about their welfare for so long is a credit to you.

I would suggest ringing the company to talk to the person who last interviewed you.  That's the last connection point you have.  If that doesn't get anywhere, then it does not, on the face of it, appear to be somewhere that I would want to work.

Hope that helps.
