Is there any template you have for what to do and what questions to ask to gain a complete understanding of a new department that has been assigned to you to manage.
for example-
Ask the following questions
What is the scope of local work, how measured, budget, workflows, where are documents, who are the global contacts, etc....
"Briefing Your Business" is a good guide
DonatoJapan, listen to the Mergers & Acquisitions podcast for a nice summary of "Briefing your business." It's not a document template, though you can use it to create a list of questions to understand how the department works, what it does, who does what, strengths and weaknesses , and plans for the future. The podcast goes into more depth on five key areas to cover - you can find it here:

Hope that helps - and congratulations on your new team. :-)
