I am looking for feedback on the following text to be used for a contact email with recruiters or people close in my network.  Would you be glad to receive this update email or not?  Fire away!   


Dear [name],

I hope this email finds you well. I know this is a busy and challenging time for you, so I just want to give you a quick update.

After becoming CFO of [my company] over 15 months ago, I moved quickly to rebuild a Finance team that was in disarray following the completion of the sale to [big company]. Looking back, there is a dramatic difference between where we were then and the smooth running Finance team I have today. As an example, over the past 3 months of this year the billing team collected an unprecedented $15M from our clients and the Aged Receivables have never looked better. This is even more impressive given the fact that our primary customers are the major automakers.

Looking forward, we have some challenges to keep the company's business results looking up. However, I remain focused on the bottom line and expect to be able to reduce monthly expenses by another 10% by the end of Q2. This will help to keep the company prepared for an extended downturn while not sacrificing too much future growth.

One problem.  I've never sent out a form letter update in my life.

Hi Farrow,

If I may be critical, the second sentence says that because things have been tough for the recipient, you want to give an update on you, the sender. I don't see the purpose of the letter because your update does not help the recipient with their problem.

Are you trying to stop job solicitations, perhaps? If so, I usually do that on a case-by-case basis because I take the opportunity to "warm" a cooling relationship or build a new one.

I know that if I received that particular letter above, I would think you had just tried to sell me stock or something. ;) :)

Terrific feedback!  Thank you .  I will head back to the drawing board and re-listen to the podcast on contacting recruiters.  I will absolutely customize the emails to make it more personal.  cheers,
