Looking for advice on what to do with my resume now that the part of the business I work for was sold too to a competitor.

Do I just list the new company name, even though the role I am in started before I technically worked for them or list as two seperate jobs (which would take up a lot of space).

Thanks

I was in a similar situation in 2006 when the department I worked for was oursourced.  I listed them as separate jobs in my resume.  Part of my decision was dictated by the fact that I had been in the position with the old company for a significant period of time and expected to be with the new company for a similarly significant period of time.  Also, as it was an outsourcing, the expectation was that the old company would be our major customer.  Another factor was that whilst the roles were the same I was able to tie different specific achievements to each job.

A big downside with listing just the new company is that it's a very easy 'lie' to be found out in and even if a recruiter accepted your explanation it would likely create a bad impression in their mind.

Yes it's a fair comment. I guess I'm thinking of space on my resume, when I've only been in this roll for a few months prior to the sale.

If it's just a few months I'd name the new company, and include the original name on the same row:

Job Title   Company X (Formerly Company Y)  entire date span

...and in the details section, find a way to note that you stayed and helped through the merger/acquisition, and what the results were. That can be important.

I advise you to keep the job to one listing and just use the parenthetical indication as Maura says.

Supply-chain Coordinator, Acme Soup, Inc. (formerly Davidson's Tomato Co.) May 2001- Oct. 2010.

If the takeover was a hugely transformative deal, if Davidson's Tomato Co. got bought out by Microsoft and suddenly your job was completely different, then you might make those jobs into separate entries. But otherwise, leave it as one big job to emphasize continuity with one employer.

As it was just a few months then I think it would be reasonable to go with one entry, so long as you note it as MAURA suggested.  As I indicated my decision to go with two entries was in part dictated by the fact that I'd been in the position with the old company for a significant period and had achievements I could tie to the different companies.

Guys

Thanks for your comments. Particularly like the bit about how I was involved (even if a small way) with the acquisition.

Much appreciated.
