I resigned and boss cancelled my meeting with my directs, took my transition files, asked me not to tell anyone and said to make my team meeting a conference call at the end of my last day.  I've worked 10 years at this company and grew from front line to senior manager role.  I have performed at a high level throughout and have a tremendous network of colleagues and friends here.

I want to respect his request even though I don't understand it.  At the same time, I want to have a hand in the transition for my direct reports' sake and want to connect with colleagues before I go.

I could use some advice so I can respond to this effectively.  I'm at a loss.

I've seen this situation many times and have been in it myself.

A common problem with these kinds of situations occurs when the person resigning doesn't get out of the way.

You're trying to help, obviously, which is good. The problem is you might not be "helping" by trying to ease the transition for your former directs. People will have to figure it out on their own. Trying to involve yourself could actually make it more difficult for those who have to develop a new way of doing things.

It's not about how you want things done any more. It's about how your boss wants things done and what you can do to help him.

Sage insight.  This is the first time I've resigned from a professional role and didn't think of it from the proper perspective.

Thank you.

I offered 3-4 weeks notice to help with the transition. My boss decided to make my last day one week after I gave him the news. I had no directs but was responsible for projects and cross functional processes and there was a lot of training I could have given to the person who would be taken over my responsibilities. I told everyone that in that last week I was available to walk through documentation and pass on any information I could. And no one contacted me. I left knowing I did my best.
