How do I address this on my resume?

I'm in the military and was temporarily (9 months) made the Deputy Commander (#2 position) when the old Deputy had to leave early and until the new one arrived. There was never any chance I'd fill the job full time because I'm not the right rank.

The result is that over two years I was:

- August 08 to Present: Communications Officer and Pentagon Liaison Officer
(now doing two distinct jobs...one at the executive level)
- November 07 to July 08: Deputy Commander
- May 07 to Nov 07: Pentagon Liaison Officer
(this is what I was brought in to do)

I really did fill all the Deputy roles...and have good accomplishments. I did not just warm a seat.

The Communications Officer used to be a civilian executive position. When she left, the CO decided to give me that job too...he had confidence I could step-up to fill two jobs and wanted to send a message to the command by reducing some of the support/admin costs for the command (money was turned into an analyst position...the "pointy end" of our spear)

I think this apparent promotion then demotion needs to be explained but don't want to waste too many words/lines on my one page resume.

Thanks for your thoughts,
Curtis

Could you add something like "Pro Tempore" or "Acting" to the Deputy Commander role description? (...or whatever language would be appropriate - I'm not familiar with military nomenclature.)

The accomplishments listed under the role should define what you did and make clear that you fulfilled the role.

I would probably call it a "detail", or a "temporary assignment". If you wanted to us the extra space you could call it a Not To Exceed (NTE) 9 month detail. Then it could be inferred that you performed the job for the maximum amount of time possible to you.
