Lots of good books on the market, but I don't think you'll find any more direct, relevant, actionable advice than you get right here. The tools apply whether your direct is a manager or an individual contributor. I have both on my team, and I use the same behaviors. The only difference is I am coaching my directs who manage people to also use one-on-ones, team meetings, feedback and coaching with their directs as well.
In my opinion, the most effective way to manage managers is to be a role model for them of effective managerial behavior.
