Where do we suggest MT podcast topics?

If this is where, I would love to hear a podcast on: How to start a new job/position.

This is of personal interest to me, as I start my first full-time job in 3 weeks. I think it would be interesting to hear how people mess up and the reasons why. And of course, how to avoid these pitfalls. I have listened to managing your boss (1&2) many times, but I also think that another podcast, more specific to starting somewhere new, would be of interest to me.

Maybe a podcast on starting new directs may be of more use to the actual managers listening to the show. I am sure this would help me as well.

Any advice anyone wants to give me on starting my new job would be greatly appreciated!

Best,

MBS

First of all, congratulations! I will always remember my first "real job" fondly, and yes -- I still cringe at some of the mistakes I make.

Don't be afraid of making mistakes. The real test is how you react and learn from them.

Another piece of advice I've heard from Mark and Mike over and over is: don't try and make a big splash right away. Do nothing earth-shattering for the first 90 days. Watch and learn as much as you can, and talk to as many people as possible. Get the lay of the land. All while delivering outstanding results, of course. I think this is just as appropriate for newly-promoted VPs as it is for college grads starting their first job.

Congratulations!

If memory serves me correctly, there's some stuff in the managing your boss podcasts and improving internal customer relationships podcasts that should be very applicable to a new job/role.

Also, you may want to look at the book "The First 90 Days" by Watkins.

Best of luck!

A couple of things I overlooked:

1. Sorry for not seeing that you had already listened to the managing your boss 'casts.

2. The First 90 Days is geared toward a manager taking on a new position. It was unclear from your original post if you will be taking a job as a manger or as an individual contributor.

Hi Quentin

Congrats. It might be helpful to say what kind of job you are starting. You might get different advice based on the type/level of job.

Wonderful idea asteriskrntt1.

To give a little more insight, I am 22 years old and just graduated from a 4 year business program. The company I am working with is a custom uniform design and manufacturing company for hotels, airlines, casinos, etc...

The program I am in is a 2 year management trainee program. In the program, I partake in a 4, six-month rotational program where I am exposed to some of the different areas of the business e.g. operations, inside sales, outside sales, etc... After the program they decide what I do best, and then hopefully assign me somewhere in, or out, of Chicago.

I hope this gives everyone some insight into what exactly I'll be doing. Also to clarify, I am an individual contributor for the next 2 years, but hopefully after that I will be given an opportunity to manage or lead.
