In my firm (and other heavy industrial companies), young engineers recently out of college are given assignments to supervise crews of union employees (most of whom are old enough to be one's dad..i.e. 25 year olds supervising 60 year olds).  The advice that is given is that the young supervisor actually needs the old veterans to learn the process and equipment along with how to fix things.

With that being said, what are your thoughts of the young supervisors (or any front line supervisor for that matter) utilizing One on Ones with their bargaining unit direct reports?  Out of the question?  Can work with some adjustments?  Or roll it out just like with a salaried employee?  Appreciate the feedback.

Sorry,

I just realized I should have posted this in the "One on Ones" sub-forum.
