A friend of mine received an offer from a new firm. The new job was to start in January and tomorrow is her last day at her current job. Today the new firm called to say that they had to rescind the offer because their funding was cut.

Is there anything that can be done at this point? I know this isn't a legal forum, but it seems like the new firm should be culpable in some part. As we all know, it takes MONTHS to find a new job and my friend - to be blunt - is totally screwed.

Has anyone else gone through this before? Any advice?

Thanks,
Kate

She does have an employment contract. She signed a contract and even filled out all of the lengthy paperwork involved in getting security clearance. It seems like there should be some legal safe-guard with this. You have a new job, you have a contract, you quit your old job, and then - whoops! just kidding - we don't have funding after all? I think I'm more outraged than she is at this point. LOL

Staying at current job is not an option. I'm not going to say that that bridge is burned down, but I will say that it is heavily soaked in lighter fluid. At the time she accepted the new offer she had another offer on the table, so I think Plan A is to go back to the offer she turned down to see if the position is still available. We'll see.

Thanks,
Kate
