Greetings ...

I am doing my MT resume and am trying to figure our a good way to show a couple of situations not addressed in the podcasts.

1- While employed as a technician, I served as an "interim" manager for roughly 9 months while the company diddled around.

2- I was promoted from technician into management (at the next job).  Should I list two jobs or only one?

3- During a previous job the (small) company was acquired by a (ginormous) foreign conglomerate.  How should that be reflected in the resume?

Any thoughts?

Tom,

Generally, list them as separate jobs, especially if you have clear achievements to report while in those different roles. So, for:

1) Assuming you went back to the technician role (and indeed did that whilst doing the management role), list overlapping appointments

e.g.

November 2004 to January 2007; Service Team Technician, Electronics Company, Melbourne, Fl

  • achievement 1
  • achievement 2
  • achievement 3

April 2006 to December 2006; Service Team Manager, Electronics Company, Melbourne, Fl

  • achievement 1
  • achievement 2
  • achievement 3

People will figure it out. An alternative might be to list the stint as manager as an achievement whilst in the technician's role.

November 2004 to January 2007; Service Team Technician, Electronics Company, Melbourne, Fl

  • achievement 1
  • achievement 2
  • Achieved <something> while seconded as team manager for nine months

2) Separately, again, especially given specific achievements:

January 2007 to April 2007; Service Team Technician, A Different Electronics Company, Mobile, Al

  • achievement 1
  • achievement 2
  • achievement 3

April 2007 to December 2008; Service Team Manager, A Different Electronics Company, Mobile, Al

  • achievement 1
  • achievement 2
  • achievement 3

3)

Assuming your role didn't change:

December 2008 to June 2009; Service Team Manager, Small Company A and Ginormous Company B, Mobile, Al

If the role did change, two separate sections would be appropriate.

Remember, the most important parts are the achievements in those roles, not the titles or the companies...

Hope that helps,
