Hi all,

BLUF as you like to say.

1. the being am arse part.

I rang a potential employer after hearing a brief job description on an industry job board  - my industry is notoriously low paying and i know I am at the high end of the scale so I explained that this was the reason i was calling, I wanted to know before spending time on the interview process if they could pay me what I expect.

This obviously caught the guy off guard but he countered with a question as well.

After an initially rocky start he said they were able and prepared to pay what I was asking.

I'm fairly upfront but I wonder if i crossed a line here - but at the same time he still wants to see me for an interview in the morning so he liked something I guess.

2. The job is managing 3 directs which i haven't done before.

I spoke to him and told him I was looking for a role where I was involved with the company I'd worded it in a creative way - developing product etc.

He said they were needing someone who knew how to handle problems and oversee a team of three.

I know how to handle problems, I'm a production manager, i make things happen. Managing staff? well not so much. I have 1 direct and he is a graphics guy who doesn't need much guidance

How do i convey this is a challenge I think I can get behind, should I bring up my research on manager tools?

Thanks guys!

If you THINK you can, then you won't convince anyone. You need to KNOW you can. What experience do you have that, if taken apart and reassebled, give you the ability to do this job.

Reading about it and listerning to people talk about it won't impress anyone.

There's a great approach to readying yourself for interviewing and answering questions in this line, contained in the interviewing series.  I highly recommend giving it a listen - worth the asking price - it got me my present job!

Thanks For your input.

I went for the interview yesterday and even though in the phone call the GM said there would be no problem with the salary I requested they changed their tune in person. They also changed the role description from managing directs to managing  the directs problems but nit the people.

In this case the problem turns out to be no problem and I've decided to look outside my industry for jobs.

Thanks again.
