Hi Folks,

I'm looking for input on how to possibly streamline the yearly performance process for entry-level type positions.

My small team is Engineering/Development, but the majority of the rest of our small company are entry-level, hourly positions involved in our daily production runs.

We currently have no formal review process and I was asked by the owners for input.  I gave lots of documentation on the MT way of doing things. I was then told that it's too much work for all but my team, and asked how can we simplify it for the rest of the company. The company structure in Operations is very flat with many people reporting to just 2 managers. The owners don't want the other managers spending hours on each review.

However, we are all concerned that doing it half way is worse than not at all.

Thanks for any input

First - Management is Hard and boring.

Sounds like the owners want great management without great managers doing good management.

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.  Some kind of structure that presents expectations and measures performance is probably better than nothing.    For a Poor (or poorly trained) Manager it won't help much.

But, for a Good manager it will help them by structuring a framework that is supported by the greater organization.  It could be a good starting point - jumping off point in the right direction.

Secondly -- You have to Embrace reality ... sooo ...

I would suggest that you put your Basic expectations into categories.

Here is a basic Idea template.

Section A

Results

1 : Evaluation of Performance of Duty 1(whatever is on the Job Description) :  Poor | Satisfactory | Excellent - Notes and details:

2 : Evaluation of Performance of Duty 2 (whatever is on the Job Description) : Poor | Satisfactory | Excellent - Notes and details:

3 :Evaluation of  Performance of Duty 3 (whatever is on the Job Description) : Poor | Satisfactory | Excellent - Notes and details:

4 : Employee shows willingness and demonstrated success towards Improvement of Performance : Poor | Satisfactory | Excellent - Notes and details:

Section B

Relationships

1 : Dependability - Punctuality and Preparedness : Poor | Satisfactory | Excellent - Notes and details:

2 : Reliability - Completes tasks and seeks out more work / Needs More or Less supervision : Poor | Satisfactory | Excellent - Notes and details:

3 : Team Performance with Co-Workers : Poor | Satisfactory | Excellent - Notes and details:

Section C

1 : Understands and contributes positive work towards the Organization's Mission (based on the Mission Statement)

That could be a good start and simple enough.

Good Luck

Sincerely,
