Hi everyone,
Quick responses to this would be appreciated as time is running out for me to deal with this situation!
A peer of mine's direct has left a small Christmas gift on my desk this morning and I am not sure if I should reciprocate by giving a gift in return.
I do not know this person particularly well and my dilemma is that if I am seen to give her a gift, then others in her team (of 7 people) may feel I am leaving them out.
I have already planned to give my small team (of 3 people) a small gift each (a bottle of wine). But I wasn't planning on giving a gift to anyone else in the company.
So should I just politely thank her for the gift, or get her something in return?
We only have 3 more days in the office before Christmas, so I need to make a quick decision on this. Please can you let me know what you would do in my situation?
Thank you,
Jane
Hi Jane Sounds like a lovely
Hi Jane
Sounds like a lovely gesture that this woman has offered. I would simply say a personal thank you, letting the person know that you really appreciate the gesture/gift. And leave it at that. I think it would be inappropriate (for the reasons you mentioned) to give a gift back. And besides, I would imagine they left you the gift because they appreciated something you did and are not expecting something in return.
Hope this helps.
All the best,
Cyndy

Thanks
Thank you Cyndy, that's really helpful advice and I'd not thought of it like that.
I'll second Cyndy
I agree with Cyndy - just politely thank her and move on.
As soon as you start having other people's actions change your plans it just gets complicated and potentially causes a domino effect.
Rest assured in the knowledge you have made a difference for someone!
