Is it a good idea to contact a hiring manager after applying online? Situation: I apply for a job through the companies website, then find the hiring manager's contact information. Can I contact them now? A week from now? Or should I wait until the company contacts me?

Why wouldn't you contact them?   The worst that can happen is that they tell you they're not interested in you.   You'll be doing something 99% of candidates don't do and look like you really want the job.

Just be prepared to be interviewed when you make the approach because you will be evaluated with every interaction.   Put forward your most professional face.
