Hi Mark and Mike,

First off, let me express my deep gratitude for your work. I have a large library of MT stuff now, and am very, very thankful for your generosity and sound advice. While I tend to "lurk" I look forward to each weeks cast and have been a member since the "early days."

The issue at hand: I have just recieved a bonus - 5% of my salary - and have never had this before. I am somewhat overwhelmed, and want to say thanks. What is the appropriate way to express my appreciation to my boss(es) and those who helped my project succeed?

Thanks for your counsel,
Gordon

They're telling you thanks for the work you did. It wasn't a gift, it was a reward.

If you treat yourself to something with it (new TV or something) tell them so. I know I appreciate knowing that the people I give a bonus to get the opportunity to enjoy it. That's the fun part of the story and I personally love to hear it.

Simply tell them thanks. Say it sincerely. Maybe a hand-written thank you card.

Just make sure you thank supervisor and the person otherwise responsible (like the managing director or other person who controls bonuses).

Shaking their hand and saying "thanks" is enough to get the point across.

Thanks for the responses. It was lunch and a "Thank You" to my direct supervisor, who submitted the recommendation, and a handshake and a heartfelt "Thank You" to his boss, who signed the cheque.

I discreetly asked the "Big Boss's" admin if there was any particular expression of thanks he might appreciate. I was thinking a collectible or cigars, small gift basket etc. Her reply was, "I don't know, people don't normally come back and say thanks, I think you'd be the first."

So, I thought he would probably end up finding out that I had asked, and and concluded that the question coupled with my handshake and sincere thanks, would express it well without coming off as too "strange."

Here's hoping my opportunities to say Thanks continue!
