OK so I have been following the interview follow-up advise from the interview series and I have a question.  I have sent the hand written letter, and I have sent an emial.  I am hitting the phone follow section of the follow-up and I now have a few questions.

1:  There were three people in the interview, do I call just the hiring manager or all three interviewers?  To date I have followed up with all three.

2:  I don't have their phone number.  I know I should have gotten it, but failed in that piece.  I have a friend that works their and could get the number from them, however I do not want to get them in trouble for giving it out.  Do I get the phone number that way or not?  I have thought and know of no othe way to get the number and even if I do, I am back to the original thought that the hiring manager might think the number came from my freind, even though it did not.

Please advise.

Jbasch,

I would only direct my contact to the decision maker at this point-- and be cautious with overdoing it.  I have interviewed candidates in this type of context before, and usually the holdup at this point is that either 1.) there are other candidates being interviewed, or more likely, 2.) the other two interviewers are waiting for the final decision maker to move forward.

While as an interviewing manager, I can appreciate a candidate following-up with me through an email, note or a call, I would probably let it go at this point.  While others may disagree, as a manager if I have received an email, phone call AND a mailed note, and the candidate STILL attempts to reach me, I'm probably going to pass.  If a person is this persistent as a potential employee, they would probably be equally as persistent as an employee.  I starting to get the feeling this person could be high maintenance, and that can be exhausting to a manager.

I had a candidate call me multiple times during a search--including somehow getting my personal cell phone and calling me at home!

That just screamed "high maintenance" to me, and I quickly got a very unfavorable impression.

(and that was before he told me his past 2 managers were jerks, and asked if I was a jerk too :)

You don't want to over do the followup.
