BLUF: Can anyone recommend some good resources for how to write a self-assessment for a performance evaluation?

It's performance evaluation season at my organization. As part of the process we are supposed to write a self-assessment of our performance in relation to our goals last year. Managers also write an assessment of each direct and then we exchange those documents prior to meeting for the performance evaluation. All the written docs are turned in to my supervisors and HR.

For one of my directs this is the first time they have ever had a performance evaluation or had to write a self assessment. I thought they understood the process, but the document that was turned into me today made it clear that they do not.

One of my challenges is the direct is very defensive when they don't know how to do something. So I need to handle this carefully so they aren't embarassed and the conversation about how to prepare for the performance evaluation is productive. I'm still working on implementing the coaching model; my direct feels put on the spot when we try to brainstorm (even with advance notice). Knowing the "right answer" is too important to them; the peanut butter rule seems like a trick/trap to them. I'm hoping that if I can provide some resources and examples, it will help them understand what we are being asked to do.

I'm reviewing the MT performance evaluation podcasts. The performance management meeting memo looks very helpful, so I plan to use it. Aside from those, if anyone has suggestions for self-assessment resources that I could share with my direct I'd appreciate it very much.

I would recommend you the following tips:

1) Start at the Beginning:

Briefly write about who you were during your first days with the company, and focus the rest of your assessment on your growth as a professional.

2) Function:

Brief description of the role you feel you play in your current position and how you handle the responsibilities, the daily task you carry.

3) Accomplishments:

Make a systematic and detail list of the accomplishment in detail. This will differentiate you from the coworkers and tell them how beneficial you    are for the organization.

4) Time:

Give at least an hour for writing the self assessment and then time to analyze it for spelling and grammatical errors.
