If you believe everything you read, career development is everybody else’s responsibility. Companies say they nurture career development on their recruiting pages. HR says they provide career development resources on their internal websites. The preamble to your annual review says that it’s part of you and your manager co-creating your career in some cases. Whilst we’d love all that to be true, most of it is marketing. There’s only one person who is really responsible, and that’s you.
