We are small to medium company and we own a flower shop, landscaping dep. and whole sale dep.

in my time I tried to concentrate on strategic planning, company growth and building up a system to control the working process as I do one formal meeting every month to discuss all the issue on all the departments and I have a lot of non formal meeting it is like chitchatting but I try to send them a massage I know that is not the way of doing it so I start doing 1O1 for 1.5 months but I could not continue with it, and it's been a full tow months with out the 1O1 and I think that neither me or them was ready to do it, so I was thinking of doing it once a month then I can take it to twice a month then I can go to the weekly and each stage I stay on it between 2 to 3 months

So is this is a good plan or not...

It's not a bad plan. If you want to try that, it's fine.

How many people work in your company? How many of them report to you? How many of those were you having one on ones with? Why do you say you and they weren't ready? What happened?

You don't have to apologize. It's going to get better.

In the flower shop I have 11, landscaping I have 35 and in hole sale I have 6 people so all of them id 52 employee

And the one that direct report to me is 8 people 4 department managers and 4 (financial manager, company secretary, company collector, Hr)

As I said that I think that they are not ready as well as I am, the landscaping department manager will leave the company because he will go back to his country for good, the flower manager was a florist and I upgrade him to manage the flower shop last march 2006 the hole sale managers (two of them) one of them was sales man and the other used to be a florist … so all my department manager is new to the managerial level or will leave on august , also we have a new financial manager he join us on Jan 2006

About me I am a computer eng. I am not into the business school and this is my father company he start it 1973 and still running it as owner and GM and I came to help him by educating my self in manager tools and I read some books and audio tape (it is my 3rd year)

The company used to be one man show which is my father assistant (3 people run this company as GM assistant or Ex. manager since it started) and I think in order for the company to grow we should act as big company with the proper structure and well defined system and a good future growth plan

First of all, don't mistake the comments below as a "challenge" to your decision to cut back on one on ones. I understand that for whatever reasons, you and your directs weren't ready. Sometimes it's hard to explain things... and our language differences don't help either. I'm sorry I don't speak Arabic.

It does seem that yours would be a great opportunity for one on ones. You are growing, so there is more need to be clear. Your direct reports are new, so they need to hear from you regularly. Please keep in mind that growth doesn't happen because of a plan, it happens because of execution.. which is what your staff will be doing.

Regardless: I am glad you are trying to grow your skills, and sometimes it's just hard. Whatever we can do to help, I would be eager to do for you. You're exactly the kind of manager Mike and I had in mind when we started Manager Tools: someone dedicated to becoming more effective.

I agree with you that the 1O1 is so important in the growing time, that why I was so sad when we discontinue with it.

We are replacing it with informal chitchatting that my target to convert it into 1O1 buy making one meeting monthly for 2-3 months
Meeting every other week for 2-3 months
The weekly 1O1

So it will be easy for me and them

And I would like to thank both of you for all the good effort that you but, tell today I have lessened to all your pod cast registered and the weekly and will continue with you and not only that I am telling all my friend about it, I don’t know how to thank both of you for the time that you spend to educate other people …
